Setting Up Your Home Office: Why This Is Important

A crucial aspect of any home business lies in having a home office. Whether it is a small area where you can set up your desk or an elaborate all out affair a home office is important to the success of your business. This area that you can claim as your own is important for a number of reasons.

It’s a reminder of your objective. By having a designated area of your home for your home office you are saying home-office-ideasclearly that this is your place of work. If you don’t “go to work” you don’t get paid. This area serves as a constant reminder of the goals that you hope to achieve. Without it you may be tempted to skip work in favor of other more interesting but less rewarding activities.

It sends a message to others. It communicates a clear message particularly to members of your family that when you are in your office you are at work and interruptions will not be welcomed. It shows them that you are serious about what you do. Whenever I am in my office and visitors drop by to visit me or my family someone always relay the message that I am at work and cannot be disturbed. Now, after many years of working at home friends and relatives all know that once my office door is shut there will be no time for idle chit chat.

Its a place to be efficient. I have set office hours. My hours are from 10-3, five days a week. Once I get into my office between these hours I know exactly what needs to be accomplished. It is all work and no time for socializing online or offline except when I take a short 30 minute break somewhere in between those hours. This works for me and keeps me productive others may have a different approach. My home office is set up in such a way that makes it possible for me to accomplish as much as possible during these five hours daily. Here are the things that make this possible for me:

  • Distractions are a no-no. Distractions can come from family who are present in the home while you work to emails and temptations to visit social networking sites and forums. Whatever they may be find a way to eliminate all distractions while you work. I do not check emails during my working hours unless I am expecting an important email and I switch off my phones. Of course I already mentioned that my family knows by now that this is not a time to interrupt me. As a work at home mom I made arrangements for a sitter to stay with my 4 year old son after he gets home from preschool just up until I am through with work. This ensures that I do not have to deal with his constant needs. He even understands that during this time mommy should not be disturbed. Its tough but it needs to be said.
  • Atmosphere is everything. Once you have taken care of all possible distractions it is important that your home office has an atmosphere that allows you to be productive. The lighting and the temperature should be ideal. The chair that you sit in and your desk is just as important. Your workstation and layout should make it easy for you to access the things that you need. I like a little soft background music while I work so I set up an entertainment center with my favorite music that I can listen to while I work. I have also added a little refrigerator so I can easily get a drink if I need to and my treadmill. The treadmill serves a dual purpose of allowing me a brief workout during my break and it is a place where I have developed my best ideas.

Its a place to turn your back on at the end of the workday. It took me a while to develop the principle of signing off at the end of the day. I wish I had taken this bit of advice sooner but I am finally understanding the benefits of it. I think that this is a trap that many home business owners fall into. There will always be a lot to do but most of those tasks can wait until the next day. Most of you started your home business to spend more time with your family, if this is the case, then spend time with your family by locking off at the end of the workday. When you close your office door for the day it is a way of leaving those perceived urgent matters behind.

This post ran a little longer than I had planned but in it I hope that you realize the importance of setting up your home office if you plan to run a successful home business.

Your 2011 Home Business Resolution

home-businessWe are two and a half months into the year and you may have accomplished a lot so far but how is your resolution to start your home business coming along? Sadly, for many of you the answer would be that you are still trying to put your plan into action. I know this because I have been there, I spent months before I actually decided to dig my heels and get my elbows greasy with the task of building my own business from the ground up. In spite of the difficult years of trial and error I am happy that I made that decision.

Change is not always easy but the hardest thing about change is actually overcoming the inertia that keeps you from moving forward. Yes, sometimes it takes a swift kick in the rear or the realization that you just cannot drag yourself to your job one more day for you to get going. The funny and great thing about change is that once you have a well thought out plan to begin with and you take action that change you make is usually well worth the effort.

Many people catch on to the idea of the freedom that working from home brings but few seriously take the time to develop a solid plan and then a course of action to execute that plan. On one hand you have one group who are so stuck in their current circumstance that they just cannot move forward and then on the other hand there are those who jump right in without giving serious thought to what is involved. The first never realize the advantages of owning a business and they gripe constantly about the cards that life has dealt and the second group will get started but never get anywhere due to their lack of planning.

The second group are the people who make themselves known all over the web knocking each and every method that others have managed to use with a great measure of success. They eventually go back to their accustomed way of life and think that those who actually made it were given some benefit or some special gift that they were not privy to.

Fortunately, there is a third group, a group that I like to think that I am a part of. These are the ones who experience the same fear that others have about starting a business but carve out a plan anyway. A well thought out plan which includes short and long term goals for the business. A plan that includes a way to earn income in the interim and a vision of the expected outcomes when the business is thriving. This group carry a do or die mindset because failure is never an option. These are the one who eventually achieve business success and experience the freedom that brings.

So my dear reader, we are two and one half months into the year but there are still ten plus months to make that dream a reality. Decide on what type of business you want to operate and develop a solid plan and by the end of this year you will be able to look back and say that it was well worth the effort.

Check back often because we will be providing a lot of resources to help you stay on track.

To your business success in 2011!
